I started teaching about 2 years ago. It was something that I had always wanted to do, and when I decided to try to make the switch, it happened very fast.
My first few days were mentored but when I was hired in the shop, I was thrown to the wolves.
There was not a lot of consistency in the training, the curriculum was a bit of a mess, I liked to call it the "Wild West". Thankfully, that has changed and there has been a lot of curriculum development during covid.
Once I found my groove, I started setting some goals. I have a 3-5 year plan:
Finish my PIDP. As this is my last course before my capstone, that is a very doable goal. The key is completing this while on contract in order to receive a raise. So my goal is to finish the 3260 in July, work on the capstone through August, to complete in September.
Become a Level 1 & 2 Gas Instructor. I find this area extremely interesting, and we are all told when we start to pick an area of expertise. This is the area I have chosen. This curriculum was recently redone due to harmonization across the provinces. I currently have access to this material so I can study and learn it. This goal is dependant on a retirement that should be happening at the beginning of 2022. The department will then be short a gas instructor, and I have made it well known that this is my chosen direction to my chief Instructor and associate dean.
Begin my masters degree. I have chosen to do an MA in education and technology from Royal Roads University. However, to be applicable, I have to have been teaching for 3 years. At this point, this is going to take me another 2 years to even be eligible. That gives me time to learn more about my job, and become skilled in the above mentioned area (gas 1&2). This will take me 2 years to complete. Some of the guys don't think it's the right step, and that only those wishing to pursue management positions would want o complete the MA. Maybe that will be in my 5-10 year plan :)
